degree cooler than this time yesterday. at lunch 52 on its way to a high in the low to mid 50s. here is sharon gibala at wjz traffic control. >> not nearly what we had yesterday but we picked up our first few problems. one on 95 in the southbound direction at eastern avenue. it's on right shoulder. an accident in the city west northern parkway. some debris reported on 895 southbound at the spur. just a slight delay between the beltway and the tunnel. that's probably because of that accident at eastern. there's a look at your average speeds on the beltway no problems there. there's a look at the west side looking good. now wjz has the stories that people are talking about this morning. here's don. >> thank you . there's new revelations about a police training accident this week. the recruit who was

shot in the forehead is still at shock trauma. wjz continues to investigation the breaches in protocol. mike schuh is live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the officer in this training incident has been identified as william scott kern. he's an 18 year veteran of the baltimore city police department. >> a baltimore city police could face criminal charges after a training exercise goes terribly wrong. state police now investigating what happened inside the old rosewood hospital site. >> we will sit back and wait for the investigation to be completed and once that is done we will review it and determine what, if any charges need to be brought. >> a wjz investigation has uncovered more than a dozen trainees were at the facility with two training officers. after a lunch break william scott kern resumed raining without his fellow instructor, a

violation of policy as both instructors are supposed to check for service weapons. officer kern fired the shot that hit the trainee. the police commissioner is temporarily shutting down the academy. >> we're determined to make sure we get to the bottom of it to ensure nothing like this happening again. >> consequences for officer kern will likely be within the department. >> their career is in big big trouble, maybe even determination. my guess would be it's probably not going to be criminal. >> a state police investigation is expected to take weeks. >> reporter: six officers including kern and the director have been suspended. i'm mike schuh reporting live. >> the city police union president telling the baltimore sun officer kern loved being a city policeman and feels remorse. the teen stabbed to death following the reporter: good afternoons victory celebration will be laid to rest.

15-year-old deonte smith was stabbed to death on february 5th during a fight involving a large group of teens. two other teens were injured this day. the search continues the find the teen who murdered him. a university of maryland student is out of the hospital this morning wounded when his house mate went on a shooting spree in their backyard. the sole survivor managed to run away and thus only has a bullet in his leg. derek valcourt talks with his family about the shooting. >> police say 23-year-old graduate student dayvon green had been diagnosed with a mental illness for more than a year. he took his own life a after killing one of his roommates stephan rane and shooting another roommate neil oa in the leg. >> we're thankful he's alive. it's just a mir acle. >> chris says his stepson neil and stephan rane were abackened

by small fires that green set in the backyard of the house. when they went out to put out the flames green opened fire. >> saw the gun coming out of his pocket and just had a sense that something wasn't right. as he turned to run that's when he got hit. he felt his leg and just decided to go run. >> family members say although neil is at home recovering and doing well he isn't ready to speak with reporters just yet until after he speak with the murder of stephan rane. 22-year-old steven rain graduated high school from ellicott city is to be laid to rest this weekend in pennsylvania. neil oa's family counts their blessing. >> as bad as we feel, we can't imagine how the other families are feeling. >> in addition to the 9 millimeter handgun green also

compensation. hundreds of people are nothing further in central russia after a meteor hit there. we want you to take a look at the meteor across the sky. officials say it caused sharp explosions, damaging buildings and injuring more than 400 people. many hurt by the broken glass fallen from the buildings. aircraft are now patrolling the area to determine additional damage. a small asteroid will pass closer to the earth than ever before since scientists began monitoring asteroids. nasa says there's no chance of impact from it. the asteroid is said to be about the size of an olympic swimming pool and will come 17,000 mile from the earth. now to a story we first brought you as breaking news

today, oscar pistorius arrested in the death of his super model girlfriend. prosecutors announced they're going to pursue premedicated charges against him. here's jessica kartalija with a closer look at the case. >> olympic track star oscar pistorius looks down as he leaves the police station charged with murder. >> a young woman did die on the scene of gunshot wounds. >> that woman was reeva steenkemp, a model and girlfriend of pistorius. she was shot four times inside athletes home. the 26-year-old sprinter known as the blade runner for his high-tech artificial legs is a national hero in south africa. he made history at the london olympics last summer, becoming the first double a amputee runner to ever compete at the game. pistorius had been with his girlfriend for several months and would have

celebrated their first valentine's day together. the day before she satisfied steenkemp tweeted there should be love for everyone. there's reports she made a surprise and he may have thought she was an intruder. police say witnesses heard screaming. >> there has previously been incidents at the home. >> his lawyer would not say much about how pistorius is feeling. >> he's very well. obviously emotional, but mine fine. >> police say forensic experts will check pistorius's alcohol level and look for evidence under his fingernails. >> this morning pistorius's bail hearing was pushed back until next tuesday. he will remain in custody until then. pitchers and catchers are gearing up for their third day

it's 24 past 6:00. this morning a plea for help is heard around the world. a columbia family is swamped with letters for noah. as gigi barnett reports, the cards and well wishes are designed to end bullying. >> in the last week karen's living room has been filled with letters, cards and packages. >> happy birthday. >> every sing le one is addressed to her 13-year-old son, noah. >> let me just tell you -- >> she asked for the letters to encourage her 7th grade son. he was being bullied at son.

they moved to the internet and video games. >> you can't escape it. i think bullies are more cowards. they do things they would never do face to face. >> last month she learned that noah was cutting himself and posted a suicide note online. she needed to do something fast. >> i put it out there. i was desperate. it was a survival plea. >> she came up with the idea in her head. >> they passed the cry for help along to thousands of others just in time for her son's 13th birthday last week. noah has a a favorite letter, from his 4th grade teacher. >> he told me how he went through that, how amazing i was. >> the letters for noah have come from all over the world including korea and as far away as australia. the family says it hasn't taken an official

will pass within 17,200 miles to earth. that's closer than a satellite that's beaming this television signal right now. >> the european space agency posted on twitter that its experts do not believe it's in any way connected asteroid 2012 da-14. a message from ray rice this morning after an impersonator sets up a fake facebook profile to try an attract women and girls. a publicist for the ravens running back says the -- says they were sending private messages with inappropriate content asking for face to face meetings. rice says he hopes this incident will persuade parents the talk to their children about online safety. maryland is just weeks away from its first ever casino table games. patrons will be able to

play craps blackjack and poker as early as next month. kai jackson explains how they hope it will make a bigger economic boom. >> when the hollywood casino opened in 2010 it was the biggest thing to hit the small town of perryville. >> hollywood casino. >> near ly ly 3 years later the operators want to up the ante on gambling. maryland voters improved the expansion of table games last november. how the hollywood casino says it will start table gaming in march >> we will be able to draw people who haven't been here before, give them a reason to want to come. >> maryland live has started training table game dealers. >> i'd rather be behind the scenes dealing. >> we expect to be flipping cards by early spring. >> it's estimated the expansion

steinberg. >> ladies and gentlemen david steinberg, steve carell. welcome to the eyewitness news morning edition. it's great to have y'all on the show. what's going on? >> nothing much. how are you? >> we're really doing well. the inside come bi dy was a run a-- comedy was a run away smash hit. i think you all shocked a lot of folks. you're both produceers. i think it shock -- producers. i think it shocked a lot of people to go inside the ropes. let's talk about the new season. how tough was it to make the decision to continue? >> not tough at all. both steve and i love doing this show. we were thrilled that they picked us up. the other thing was it wasn't tough to get anybody because they had seen the show and responded to it. the line up this year is almost as strong as the line up

last year, which is incredible. >> i guess my question was more along the lines of, maybe move on to the next project so many times -- we want more as the case may be. it's not the case this time. >> we're as greedy as anyone. if we can get accolades for two seasons or three or four seasons of the show, that's just more accolades for us to gather and run on. i want to be so weighed down by accolades that i can hardly move. >> have you ever approached a comic who did not want to go on because they felt talking about their comedy would kill the magic? >> it's interesting. i don't think anyone ever really comes onto deconstruct what they do necessarily. i think most comedians and comic actors don't

necessarily like talking about why things are funny. i think it's personal than that. it's about what their influences were who they respect what makes them laugh. i think it's more of an exchange of ideas as opposed to a deconstruction of comedy. >> let's carry that further. steve, you're sit ing -- sitting next to a true honest to god legend. when did you first meet david and were you in awe? >> i was. we have a mutual friend who runs my production company. they essentially came up with this idea to interview and do a documentary. i filmed a documentary interviewing the legends and more contemporary comic voices. we found there were so many people. as you were saying, you can't give mel

brooks 30 seconds of a movie you have to get into some depth there. that's when we first met. i think david -- you know, i've watched david for years. he is renowned as a director and actor and koe median. i felt very lucky. >> of course david you looked at steve and thought to yourself, man, you look the same in person as you do on the office. >> what's the question. >> i said so you -- >> don't even. just ignore it. >> no, that was fun. that was good. see, that was good. >> it was a really stupid, stupid thing. >> we will let david judge that. i said, so when you met steve did you think to yourself, the he looks the same as he does in person as he does in the office? >> he looked a little smaller to me than he does on television. >> there you go.

officer who shot a recruit from the university of maryland police is an 18 year veteran and is identified as william scott kern. officer kern reportedly mistook his service weapon for a training weapon and shot the other man in the forehead during the session in ownings mills this week. the other man is in grave condition this morning. kern has been suspended along with five other officers as the investigation continues. this morning the teen fatally stabbed following the ravens victory celebration will be laid to rest. 15-year-old deonte smith was stabbed to death on february 5th during a fight involving a large group of teens. two other teens were injured that day. smith's funeral will be held today. the search continues to find the teen responsible. a message from ray rice after an impersonator sets up a fake facebook profile to try to attract women and girls. a publicist says they were sending out private messages with inappropriate content and asking for face to face meetings with
